9-80 Work Schedule

The daily nine-to-five work schedule has been the norm for most businesses for a long time. While there is nothing wrong with this, other organizations are exploring a different work schedule that offers an alternative. It might be very different than what employees are accustomed to. However, it can offer benefits in the long run. 

What is a 9/80 Work Schedule? 

A 9/80 work schedule generally means 80 hours in nine days. It is an alternative schedule that compresses or fits in two weeks’ worth of work in fewer days. A 9/80 work schedule adds one hour for eight workdays while retaining one eight-hour day in two weeks. In doing so, employees will have earned an extra day off. 

It is helpful to keep in mind that businesses with this system commonly break the eight-hour workday into two four-hour periods wherein the first week ends after the first four-hour period and the second week begins with the second four-hour period. This way, each week still has 40 work hours each.

What are the rewards of a 9/80 Work Schedule?

The primary benefit of a 9/80 work schedule is increased productivity in the workplace by improving the work-life balance of employees. Through the extra day off, employees can have more time to rest, be with their families, and take care of personal matters. They can opt to schedule doctor’s appointments, check-ups, or any other personal business they would otherwise request time off for. The long weekend will also allow trips out of town with family or friends. Another perceived benefit of a 9/80 work schedule is an easier commute for employees. They can avoid the rush hour, heavy traffic, and will feel less tired from the daily commute. 

Many employees look forward to the additional day off and see it as a reward for the long work hours during the week. The improved morale can encourage them to work with renewed energy. Well-rested employees mean reduced stress levels and overwhelm at work. For organizations, the additional day off can translate to fewer requests for personal time off and sick days.

Are there any possible drawbacks of a 9/80 Work Schedule? 

Although there are perceived rewards of this new schedule, there are some businesses that can find it more complex and difficult to implement. Even with the extra day off, some employees may still struggle with the additional work hour each day. Depending on the work environment, some may find it extensive and overwhelming. Also, the additional hour means having to adjust some personal obligations like picking children up from school, later meal times, or less time to rest after a long day.
