What is CASDI? 

CASDI refers to the California State Disability Insurance. It is a program of the California Employment Development Department that aims to help California workers who are temporarily unable to perform work because of a non-work-related injury, illness, or pregnancy. CASDI is a short-term disability program that provides wage replacement benefits to eligible individuals. Through this program, eligible individuals can collect weekly tax-free benefits until such time that they can return to work or up to a maximum of one year. 

How is CASDI funded? 

The funds from CASDI come from state income tax that is withheld from employee’s wages. This contribution is noted as CASDI on the paystub. 

How much is the employee contribution rate for CASDI? 

The CASDI contribution rate for 2021 is 1.2% and the maximum amount that can be withheld for each employee per year is $1,540.

How much can eligible individuals collect under CASDI?

For 2021, eligible individuals can collect a weekly maximum benefit amount of 

$1,357. Multiply this weekly benefit limit to 52 weeks (for a whole year) and the maximum benefit amount for an entire year is $70,564.
