What is employee management? 

Employee management is not about telling employees what tasks to do and making sure that they do it. Employee management refers to the collective effort of supporting employees and helping them do their job well. It is a broad term that encompasses strategies, procedures, and actions to help sustain and manage an engaged workforce. 

There are numerous tasks and responsibilities under employee management. The following are the fundamental categories under employee management: 

• Selection: the process of hiring the most suitable candidates to fill open roles in the organization. 
• Monitoring: involves keeping track of the employee’s work performance and evaluating if the employee is meeting the work standards set by the company. 
• Interaction: covers the daily communication with the employee that can occur between and among peers, supervisors, and leaders where feedback, company culture, and job expectations can be communicated. 
• Reward: giving the employee recognition, praise, prizes, and other incentives that affirm an employee’s exceptional work performance. 
• Discipline: involves the measures that managers can execute to improve an employee’s substandard work performance and to correct other behaviors that go against company policies. 

Overall, employee management plays a pivotal role in running an organization. Effective employee management can spell the difference between a workforce resting on mediocrity and a workforce performing exceptionally.
