Overview:
The hospice aide is a paraprofessional member of the interdisciplinary group who works under the supervision of a registered nurse. They perform various services for patients to meet their personal needs and promote comfort. The hospice aide is responsible for observing, reporting, and documenting patient observations and care performed. This role plays a vital part in promoting quality, continuity, and safety of patient care.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform personal care needs for assigned patients promptly
- Meet safety needs of patients and use equipment safely and properly
- Provide personal care, including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linen
- Assist in dressing and undressing patients
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals, including shopping
- Assist in feeding patients
- Take and record vital signs
- Provide proper care and observation of patient's skin
- Report patient's condition and significant changes to the Case Manager
- Assist in ambulation and exercise
- Offer and assist with bedpans and urinals
- Perform range of motion and other simple procedures
- Provide respite for patients/families/caregivers when on-site
- Keep patient's living area clean and orderly
- Adhere to documentation and care procedures
- Participate in quality assessment performance improvement teams and activities
- Respect patient and family/caregiver environment and personal needs
Job Requirements:
- Successful completion of a state-established or other training program
- Training requirements of the State
- At least 18 years of age
- Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care given
- Comfortable providing specialized care to the terminally ill
- Satisfactory references from previous employers
- Self-directing with the ability to work with little direct supervision
- Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired
- Current CPR certification
- Demonstrates tact, patience, and good personal hygiene
- Licensed driver with automobile that is insured in accordance with organization requirements and is in good working order
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Good organizational skills
