Do you have a passion for wine and/or making wine? The Winemaker’s Assistant provides support to the winemaker in overseeing the entire production process of creating wine, including grape harvesting, crushing, fermentation, aging, blending and bottling as needed. This position includes vineyard responsibilities, as well as some promotion and sales responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
General
- Assist in all winemaking, maintaining existing and creating new blends as directed by Winemaker
- Assist in lab analysis
- Participate in wine related expansion and development to achieve goals of operations
- Help manage inventory levels of supplies and materials used in the production of wine
- Assist in development of the product mix and grape needs for coming season
- Collaborate with the winemaking team to plan blends and products to be produced to meet projections
- Assist in in-house tastings & blending trials
Safety and Equipment
- Assist in all aspects of winery sanitation
- Maintain all wine associated equipment, pumps, and bottling line
- Help maintain integrity of wines, grapes, juice filtering, blending and bottling
- Awareness in safety protocols, if known USDA and OSHA
- Assist in sanitation of all winemaking equipment and facility operations
- Help maintain and repair of equipment and tanks used in the cellar operation
- Help monitor the condition of all wines in an effort to prevent spoilage
Administrative
- Assist in maintaining government record keeping
- Inventory management of supplies, bulk wine, and case goods
- Maintain records as required for the purpose of meeting government and corporate requirements
Vineyard Responsibilities Include:
- Work collaboratively with vineyard manager to manage incoming fruit during harvest
- Pruning
- Spraying
- Growing Activities: Shoot Positioning, Leaf Removal and Cluster Thinning
- Vineyard Expansion Activities: Planting, Trellis Installation, Plant Training, and Watering
- Harvesting
Promotion and Sales Responsibilities Include:
- Lead public and private tours as needed
- Attending all necessary wine events and tastings
- Willing to travel for outside events
- Festival Sales
Requirements:
- A degree in Enology or related science field is preferred, but can be substituted with comparable experience along with a minimum of 3 years winemaking experience.
- Knowledge of grapes, growing regions, and local production and marketing regulations
- Solid track record of success in previous assignments.
- Must be able to life 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout the day.
- Must be comfortable on ladders and with heights.
- Excellent skills in Microsoft environment.
- Reliable transportation.
