[SEASONAL] - Barn Steward

PLEASE NOTE: This is a seasonal position for the month of January 2025, with the potential to start in late December based on candidate availability. Individuals in this role will be required to work every day January 8th-January 26th, up to 12 hours per day. Additional work may be available the week following Stock Show, January 27th-January 31st.

 

Overview

As the Barn Steward, you will be the first point of contact for livestock exhibitors as they arrive at the barn, ensuring a welcoming and organized experience. Your main responsibility will be to greet exhibitors, confirm their stalling details, and guide them to their assigned pens. You’ll work closely with the Livestock Office and Exhibitor Services teams to ensure a smooth transition from check-in to stalling.

 

This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who enjoys working with livestock, assisting people, and creating positive experiences in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is a friendly, service-oriented individual who thrives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

 

Reports to: Stalling Managers

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Greet livestock exhibitors upon arrival at the barn, providing a warm and helpful welcome.
  • Assist exhibitors in locating their assigned pens, confirming stall details, and ensuring a smooth stalling process.
  • Coordinate with Stalling Managers to verify stalling information and ensure accurate placement.
  • Provide answers to exhibitor questions and offer assistance as needed for a seamless transition into the barn area.
  • Monitor barn areas for organization and cleanliness, reporting supply or maintenance needs.
  • Assist with barn setup, maintenance, and breakdown to ensure a well-prepared and safe environment.
  • Collaborate with team members to manage barn traffic flow and maintain an orderly stalling area.
  • Issue release paperwork to exhibitors at assigned release times.
  • Communicate with Operations staff on barn readiness and preparation.

Desired Experience, Skills, & Abilities

  • Previous experience working with livestock, preferably in a barn environment, is required.
  • Strong background in customer service, with a friendly and professional approach to exhibitor interactions.
  • Candidates must be available for early mornings, late nights, and weekends throughout the 16 days of Stock Show (January 8th-January 26th), with shifts up to 12 hours per day.
  • Candidates must have the ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and work both indoors and outdoors as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure accurate stalling placements and a clean, safe barn area.
  • Fluent in English with clear verbal communication abilities, especially in a customer-facing environment.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively, with a proactive approach to problem-solving. 

Working Conditions

National Western Complex is a multi-purpose indoor and outdoor commercial and agricultural complex where dusty conditions and animals may exist. While performing the duties of this job, work is performed both indoors and outside in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and rain, on varied surfaces. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with large crowds.

 

Compensation & Benefits

  • This is a seasonal, hourly position with a pay rate of $20.00/hour.
  • Paid sick time offered at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
