Choreographer Job Description
A choreographer designs and directs dances in musical productions, music videos, plays, movies, and any other settings that require choreographed movements. Choreographers work closely with dancers. It’s their job to teach the dancers specific movements and how to incorporate them into the larger piece. This can be a difficult job and requires an advanced understanding of multiple different dance styles. Choreographers often choreograph dances under the director’s guidance. They might be asked to take the director’s vision and turn it into a dance piece. Achieving this requires being able to interpret the director’s words into a dance piece that meets the style and pacing of their vision.
Qualifying for work as a choreographer requires extensive dancing knowledge and skill. Candidates must also have excellent creative skills and the ability to interpret the instructions that they receive into cohesive dance pieces.
Education isn’t always required for this position. But some of those who hire choreographers prefer candidates who have degrees in fine arts.
