Marine Mechanic Job Description

Marine mechanics are mechanics who work on boats. It’s their job to inspect a wide variety of boats, identify any issues that they may have, and repair those issues. For example, a marine mechanic may test and repair boat engines, and work on hulls, propellers, masts, sails, and navigational equipment.

An employee in this role will also need to remove boats from the water so that they can work on them. Marine mechanics typically use winches and tracks to set boats up on blocks so that they can have easy access to all components of the vessel. Marine mechanics also perform general boat maintenance tasks. They might be called upon to remove barnacles from a boat and to clean it with power washers and sandblasting equipment.

To qualify for the role of a marine mechanic, it can be useful to have training from a vocational or technical school. But many employers will hire the right candidates without these qualifications as long as they know how to complete the major tasks of a marine mechanic.
